Lilly's Chocolate Heart
PreSchool-Grade 2--Lilly has one red-foil-wrapped chocolate heart left and she wants to find the perfect hiding place for it. However, every place the little mouse considers is either too dusty, too warm, too tight, too narrow, or just wrong. She finally decides to put the candy in her mouth: "Perfect." The straightforward text is printed on pastel-colored pages facing a picture of Lilly on a white background. This is a delightfully simple tale, but not really a concept for the under three-year-olds who would appreciate the board-book format. Slightly older children will enjoy the story but they're likely to be turned off by the packaging. Too bad.--Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, NY

Ballad of Valentine
Reviewers and readers really loved this hilarious and pitch-perfect Valentine’s Day picture book, set to the familiar rhythms of "Clementine." Alison Jackson, author of the Thanksgiving favorite I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie, cleverly replaces the heroine of "Clementine" with a dreamy girl named Valentine who keeps missing what’s right in front of her nose: the love letters being sent her way by a smitten admirer. Brought to life by the larky illustrations of Tricia Tusa, this silly and sweet tale is perfect for little valentines as well as grown-up sweethearts.

Saint Valentine

How did Valentine's Day, one of our most popular holidays, begin?

It started in ancient Rome when a kind physician named Valentine took an interest in a young blind girl. With his healing skill and his deep faith he restored her sight. What we now call Valentine's Day began when he sent the little girl a secret message, which she received after the Christian martyr was executed. For this tale rich in sentiment, master illustrator Robert Sabuda has created exquisite paper mosaics to suggest early Christian art that resonates with both subtlety and power.

Mouse's First Valentine (Classic Board Books)
Little Mouse follows his big sister around the house early one February morning, wondering just what she's doing with the "smooth and rosy," "sticky and goopy," and "white and holey" things she searches for and finds. Finally, after a little paper folding, paste brushing, and lace smoothing, Mouse has his answer. "Little Mouse," his sister calls. "This valentine is just for YOU on Valentine's Day." Fans of Lauren Thompson and illustrator Buket Erdogan's other Mouse books, Mouse's First Christmas and Mouse's First Halloween, will be tickled pink to see this duo's Valentine's Day title. Soaked in Valentine reds, pinks, and purples, with text playfully wrapping around Mouse's tail or over his ears, this entertaining little picture book is just the thing to introduce young ones to the holiday or to inspire a creative afternoon of valentine-crafting for friends and family. Love Is...
Subject of sonnets, songs, and soul searching, love is--and is not--many things. "Love is patient. Love is kind. Love is not envious or boastful. Love is not arrogant or rude." In her adaptation of I Corinthians 13, Wendy Anderson Halperin presents the elegantly simple definition of the word "love" the apostle Paul offered 2,000 years ago. She features one of Paul's definitions on each whimsically illustrated two-page spread. Pages are framed in an ornate yet homespun decorative pattern, and covered with divided boxes portraying the dearth of love's benefits on the left (sticking out your tongue, for example), and the bounty of love on the right (a fatherly kiss on the head). Halperin's detailed pencil and watercolor illustrations will provide something new to explore with every reading--dozens of picture stories-within-stories act as a starting point for discussion with children.

Halperin has illustrated many charming books for children, including Marsha Wilson Chall's Bonaparte and Sophie and Rose by Kathryn Lasky. (Ages 4 to 8, or a gift from adult to adult) --Emilie Coulter
