Abe Lincoln Remembers
From his humble beginnings in a small log cabin, young Abe Lincoln knew "that being tall is not enough to make your way in this world." He worked hard on a flatboat, in a general store, and then studying to become a lawyer, eventually making his way into politics. Along the way he married and had three boisterous sons: "They were like balls bounding down a road, and people said they had no manners or discipline. I thought happiness more important than manners, though I didn't like it when Tad drove his cart and goats down the White House hall." Deeply relieved when the Civil War is over, Abe Lincoln is finally ready to be happy on the fateful night that he sets out to Ford's Theater to see a play with his wife. The focus of this simple picture book is not on Lincoln's death--the book concludes before Abe and Mary even leave the White House--but rather on the admirable life he led. Although many are well acquainted with the legendary story of young Abe's rough upbringing in Kentucky and his unquenchable thirst for learning, Ann Turner's fictionalized biography, told in a fresh and immediate first-person point of view, adds a sweet note of poignancy and humanity to one of America's greatest heroes. With his historically accurate paintings, award-winning illustrator Wendell Minor captures the expressions and experiences of a man who, at the conclusion of the war, sees "how sorrow has dug lines in my cheeks." --Emilie Coulter

The Train of States

The train of states is rolling by --
rush to the window and watch it go!
The very first car? The very first state:
Delaware, of course,
followed by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia ...
fifty in all.
The caboose? Washington, D.C.!

Look closely! What do you see?
State birds, state flowers, state trees ...
forty-three presidents! Can you find them all?
Can you spot the flags, heroes, animals, and landmarks
adorning the train of states?

Clickety clack, clickety clack.
Rush out the door, rush to the track.
Where is the train going? Come along!
Over the prairie, over the mountains,
down a green valley, and into a billowing tent.
It's time for a party --
it's time to celebrate
the fifty states!

This Land Is Your Land
This lovely picture book celebrates one of America's most important treasures, the familiar folk song sung by people everywhere, of all ages and backgrounds. Originally written by Guthrie to call attention to the plight of those ordinary Americans hit hardest by the Depression of the 1930s, the song is a paean to America's beautiful geography and landscapes, the diversity of its inhabitants, and the indomitable spirit of the American people. Here the complete lyrics serve as the book's main text and are brought to life by stunning, vibrant folk-art illustrations of the people and places of America, coast to coast and past to present. As the lines of the song unfold page by page, meticulously detailed, tiny vignettes and gorgeous, expansive vistas add depth and drama to the words and introduce the beauty and diversity of America. Viewers and readers follow the path taken by Guthrie, from the stark, beautiful deserts and wide-open prairies to the bustling cities with their crowds and awesome architectural feats of engineering. Labeling of many of the vignettes is helpful, although some depictions of historical phenomena and events may puzzle younger children. A complete musical notation is included, as is a tribute to Guthrie written by folksinger Pete Seeger. The biographical scrapbook at the book's end is both fascinating and informative, with photos and text highlighting Guthrie's life and career, the history of the song, and the impact of the Depression era to illuminate further the importance and emotional appeal of "This Land Is Your Land." Like the song itself, this book is a treasure. Shelle Rosenfeld

So You Want to Be President? (Caldecott Medal Book)
Tired of books about the presidency that present themselves as history books? Author Judith St. George--along with Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator David Small--has created a book about the presidency that's serious fun. The basic theme is that anyone can be president: a fat man (William Howard Taft) or a tiny man (James Madison), a relative youngster (Teddy Roosevelt at 42) or oldster (Ronald Reagan at 69). Presidential hobbies, sports, virtues, and vices all get a tongue-in-cheek airing, perfectly matched by Small's political-cartoon style of caricature painting. It's fun, but the underlying purpose is clearly serious: to remind kids that the American presidents have been a motley group of individuals, not a row of marble busts. Ironically, that message makes the presidency far more interesting (and appealing) than it seems in some of the more traditional books. There's a factual addendum at the back giving all the dates and names, with a one-line bio for each past-president. (Ages 8 and older) --Richard Farr

By The Dawn's Early Light
Gr. 2-4. The story of how Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner" is a familiar one, but seldom has it been so handsomely presented. Kroll relates numerous details of Key's mission, rounding out a sometimes sketchy historical legend with actual names, facts, and dates. An author's note gives some additional details, including the name of the woman who made the flag that Key saw "in the dawn's early light." A photograph of Key's original manuscript, the music and lyrics to the anthem, a map of the Battle of Baltimore, and a bibliography are also provided. The full-page oil paintings enhancing each double-page spread are reminiscent of the work of such American illustrators as N. C. Wyeth.
