In the awfully silly I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie, children's librarian and author Alison Jackson bypasses pilgrims completely and cuts straight to the stomach of Thanksgiving in America--dinner. A slightly dizzying new spin on the well-loved cumulative rhyming song "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," this madcap picture book stars a ravenously hungry relative who comes to Thanksgiving dinner with a pie. Since she eats the pie in its entirety before she even gets in the house, she has to swallow some cider (that "rumbled and mumbled and grumbled inside her"). If you must know, "She swallowed the cider to moisten the pie, / The Thanksgiving pie, which was really too dry, /Perhaps she'll die." Squanto's Journey: The Story of the First Thanksgiving
Most American children know the story of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving, but the Native American side of the tale is far less familiar. She would rather be a boy so that she can join the men on their expeditions and go eel hunting with her father at night. Her thoughts and feelings are a good introduction to the voyage and the Pilgrims' first year in New England. In diary entries running from October 1, 1620 to November 10, 1621, Mem describes the bad food, poor hygiene, and almost daily deaths from illness. The format, with spaces between entries, will appeal to reluctant readers, while the lively writing will hold the attention of good readers. A historical note on the year 1620, maps, a diagram of the Mayflower, and reproductions of historical prints add to the social-studies value of the book.
