Bigger, Better, Best! (MathStart 2)

Jenny and Jeff are driving their little sister, Jill, crazy, and now that the family is moving into their new house it's worse than ever. Who'll have the bigger window? Who'll have the bigger bedroom? How can they measure the space so that they'll know for sure?

Jenny and Jeff must calculate area to settle their debate. This simple geometry concept will prove once and for all whose room is bigger -- but maybe Jill can show her squabbling siblings that bigger isn't always better!

Spaghetti And Meatballs For All (Marilyn Burns Brainy Day Books)
Burns (The I Hate Mathematics! Book) inventively turns a family reunion into a lesson on perimeters. Readers can hone their division skills as Mr. Comfort bakes "16 loaves of garlic bread" and rolls "96 meatballs" for the 32 attendees. Meanwhile, Mrs. Comfort perfectly arranges 32 chairs around eight square tables, according to a bird's-eye-view blueprint. Family will be family, however, and as the guests arrive, they elect to sit together, carelessly pushing tables into banquet-style rectangles that won't accommodate all 32 chairs. Tilley's (Riddle-icious) wide-angle illustrations provide a good view of the mele, as visitors rearrange at whim and a harried Mrs. Comfort brandishes her map of the original plan. In an afterword, Burns suggests that adults act as guides to young audiences and use cutout squares to represent the table placement. A wise recommendation if the intention is to teach, but for many the mirthful game of musical chairs may take precedence over perimeters. Ages 7-up.

Sir Cumference and the Isle of Immeter (Math Adventures)
Grade 3-6–Sir Cumference returns in this tale that introduces readers to the concepts of perimeter and area. As in the previous books, Neuschwander's characters have names that play with mathematical terminology. In this adventure Per visits his uncle and aunt (Sir Cumference and Lady Di of Ameter). After learning a game involving inners and edges, she and her cousin Radius become embroiled in a mystery with a secret message and a threatening sea serpent. To solve it, the youngsters must travel to the Isle of Immeter and use a series of geometric formulas to tame the sea serpent and bring peace to the area. Readers already familiar with these formulas will have the most ease understanding and solving the mystery. Teachers introducing the concepts of perimeter and area might find the book useful. –Maura Bresnahan, High Plain Elementary School, Andover, MA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
