The Quilting Bee

Design, snip, clip . . .

Welcome to the quilting bee!

With the help of popular author/illustrator Gail Gibbons, you'll learn how quilts are made and discover their fascinating history as well as lots of fun facts.

Back in colonial times, quilting bees were important social functions, combining both work and pleasure. They still exist today and attract thousands of snippers, clippers, and stitchers from all walks of life.

Some traditional quilt patterns have funny names: Trip Around the World, Bear's Paw, Crazy Quilt. Today's quilt makers also use their imaginations to create new designs that are works of art.

Here's the book to get you started in the wonderful world of quilts. Maybe you'll want to make one of your own!

Pattern Fish
The author is a teacher who wrote this book to use in the classroom. It is an excellent tool for encouraging kids to become aware of patterns, or rhythms. In a back section titled "About Patterns," the author and illustrator show clearly the various patterns used in the book. The reader is encouraged to hear, as well as see, the patterns. The simple AB pattern is used in the beginning, featuring a fish that is "yellowblack, yellowblack, yellowblack." In addition, the frame around the first spread repeats two colors in an AB pattern. The "chompchompmunchmunch" of the sea horse eating seaweed for lunch is an AABB pattern as is the frame around the illustration. The amusing illustrations of the various sea creatures, including a smiling octopus moving along with a "stretchspurtglide" and a jellyfish maneuvering through the waves with a "wigglejigglejigglefloat" will, along with the rhythmic text, make this book popular with young learners. --Carolyn Mott Ford

Pattern Bugs
Expressive bugs doing buggy things lead you on their daily rounds. The illustrations depict their daily activities such as floating, crawling, sipping and chewing. The bugs' engaging and somewhat goofy faces keep you in the story. But you soon realize more is going on here. A colored border above and below the pictures depict a pattern. The fun is in hunting for matching patterns less evident in the picture. How many can you find? Some are pretty subtle. This pattern is also reinforced in the text with patterns that are heard, not seen. For example, the simplest pattern has two parts and is called an AB pattern. This is seen in the text as "flutter-float, flutter-float." In the border it is represented by alternating orange and yellow blocks. The illustrated butterflies reinforce the AB pattern with a repeating pattern of large dot, small dot in their wings. As you continue to look at the picture you see the AB pattern is everywhere. Turn the pages and the patterns become more complex and interesting. The author is a parent and a teacher who wrote this book to use in her classroom. Her point is that patterns are all around us and this surely is an engaging way to bring awareness of patterns to children. --Barbara Kennedy

Lots and Lots of Zebra Stripes: Patterns in Nature
On the first page of this gorgeous photo-essay, Swinburne defines patterns as "lines and shapes that repeat," opening the way for them to be found everywhere. And find them he does--on the striped watermelons of summer and ridged pumpkins of autumn; in spider webs and on scaly snakes. He also shows how some patterns, such as the rings of a tree, can give us information. Using a variety of simple questions, he encourages youngsters to look for patterns in likely places such as flowers and insects, as well as in unlikely ones such as the inside of their lunch sack. By the time the last page is turned, even the young children will understand the concept. A nature walk or just a stroll through the neighborhood to look for patterns would be a pleasant way to reinforce the concept and demonstrate its real-life applications. --Lauren Peterson
