Find the Constellations
A delightfully illustrated, informative beginner's guide to locating and identifying constellations in the northern hemisphere, with an extensive index, glossary, and time table for sky viewing. bought this book about 20 years ago. I still use it as a stargazing guide. It's the best I've seen for breaking down the night sky into easily digestible, understandable bits. Over the years I have referred to it repeatedly. I just moved to the country after several years in a city and can see the stars again, and was using this reference just this evening.
It starts out by teaching the constellations a person could recognize immediately, such as the Big Dipper. It then moves on to various topics, such as the brightest stars and the constellations in which they are found, and the constellations that comprise the zodiac. A little of the mythology behind the names of the constellations is also explained. At the end of the book are various "sky-views", facing north and south, for each season of the year (e.g., what you can expect to see facing south in the winter, or north in the spring). All the constellations are introduced throughout the book with their line drawings, then shown without the lines so you can imagine them yourself. The sky-views are also drawn with and without lines. The Stars: A New Way to See Them
This is a clear, vivid text with charts and maps showing the positions of the constellations the year round. From its easy reading style to the fantastic illustrations, this book is a must-read for anyone with a basic interest in stargazing and the underlying science. Rey's concept of playing a celestial game of connect-the-dots makes it easy for child and adult alike to remember the constellations and their positions in the sky. He also provides information on each constellation's history, legends (where they apply), and objects of interest.
I minored in astronomy in college, and I was the only person, of the professors or students, who could navigate the night sky without a map. And it was all thanks to this magnificent book.

The Original Curious George
**Collector's Edition**As the introduction explains, the watercolor paintings that accompany this special edition of the very first Curious George story made their way out of Paris on the back of Hans Rey's bicycle, as he and his wife, Margaret, narrowly escaped the German occupation. By way of Spain and Brazil, Rey and his work came to the United States, where cash-strapped children's publishers always required "color separation" art--i.e., a different drawing for each color. So Rey's watercolors were not used, and for subsequent books he never even did them; only now, for the first time, has that first set been used directly. Otherwise, it's the story you probably already know, though a bit more luxuriously produced, about how Curious George came to make life a lot more interesting for the Man in the Yellow Hat. Whiteblack the Penguin Sees the World
Ah, the dreaded storyteller's block. Whiteblack the penguin, Chief Storyteller of Penguinland's W-O-N-S radio station, has run out of material. "I guess I'll take a vacation and travel," he decides. "Travelers always have lots of stories." And off Whiteblack goes, on the journey of a lifetime. Before the trip is over, this intrepid traveler has been shipwrecked on an iceberg ("I've always wanted to be in an accident"), been shot out of a cannon, acted as midwife to two hatching ostriches, crossed the desert--partway on a camel and the rest on a homemade scooter, and fallen out of an airplane, only to land in a fishnet. With plenty of new stories to share, Whiteblack returns to a hero's welcome in Penguinland. Well-loved for their Curious George stories, Margret and H. A. Rey teamed up on many other picture books over their lifetime together. But little did the reading world know, yet another marvelous book lay fallow in their files for over 60 years. Its discovery, after Margret Rey's death in 1998, is a blessing for the countless fans of this incredible creative pair. Whiteblack is a charming and positive fellow, a worthy model for any world traveler. Margret Rey believed Whiteblack was one of H. A.'s and her best books--and we concur. The Complete Adventures of Curious George
Sixty years have passed since a curious little chimp in Africa met the man with the big yellow hat and got into the first of many scrapes. Decades later, George is as curious--and naughty--as ever. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Curious George's debut, this special edition is a collection of seven classic adventures by Margret and H.A. Rey, along with an introduction by critic Leonard Marcus, a retrospective note by publisher Anita Silvey, a history of the Reys by Dee Jones, curator of the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection, and a photo album. The many generations of fans of the "good little monkey who was always very curious" will be fascinated to learn how H.A. and Margret escaped on bicycle from German-occupied Paris, with just their winter coats and several picture books (including a draft of Curious George, then called Fifi) strapped to the racks. Photos and essays reveal H.A. to have been a gentle, humorous man, while Margret, by all accounts, was spirited and brutally direct, with a keen business mind. The chemistry between them worked beautifully. Between them, they created one of the most beloved characters in children's literature. This handsome volume includes Curious George, Curious George Takes a Job, Curious George Rides a Bike, Curious George Gets a Medal, Curious George Flies a Kite, Curious George Learns the Alphabet, and Curious George Goes to the Hospital. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
