Anno's Counting Book
What kind of a counting book is this? On the first page all we see is a barren winter landscape--a hazy, blue sky above a hazy, white hill. Nothing to count here. But wait, this is zero! On the next page the scene brightens: one tree, one bird, one house. Turn the page again and the snow has started to melt--we find two buildings, two trucks, two trees, two children, two dogs, and two adults. Suddenly there is almost more than we can count on each page! The objects in the beautiful watercolor pictures correspond with each consecutive number, and in addition (so to speak), the number of items on the page increases exponentially. Mitsumasa Anno, author and illustrator of the award-winning Anno's Journey, has crafted a lovely medium to help kids learn to count. His love for numbers is reflected in the symmetry of every page, as well as his respect for the mathematical relationships that occur all around us. What kind of a counting book is this? PreS-Gr 1-- In this well-conceived counting book, Sloat makes readers aware of the groupings of objects all around them. The items to count are shown in individual story scenes crammed with action rather than isolated on the page. Below each picture runs a band showing the numeral--as well as its written name--and the things to seek out. She covers the numbers 1 to 10 and then by 10s to 100. The artist's style is more like that of Steven Kellogg than Anno so look for lots of humor worked into each drawing from 5 otters stealing 5 sets of clothes from campers to 70 bees swarming among 70 hot-air balloons and zeroing in on one with a sunflower design. There are tons of other clever details worked in throughout the book. Sloat gets her ideas across handsomely and appears to have had fun doing it.
