The Reading Nook

At The Reading Nook, we have taken the guesswork out of selecting the best children's books by doing the research for you.  Here you will find high quality children's literature recommended by reading experts.  Reading aloud is one of the most important things you can do for your child in kindergarten.  By sharing children's books, you begin laying the foundation for vocabulary and background knowledge; two essential skills necessary for reading success.  Following is a list of suggested books developmentally appropriate for your little one.

"There is one skill that matters above all others, because it is the prime predictor of school success or failure: the child's vocabulary upon entering school.  And since most instruction for the first four years of school is oral, the child who already has the largest vocabulary will understand the most, while the child with the smallest vocabulary grasps the least" (Jim Trelease, The Read-Aloud Handbook, Penguin Books 2001).
